Pet Age Calculator

Choose a dog or a cat, then enter a date of birth or an age. You get an estimate in human years, the general life stage and the working behind it.

Nothing you enter here is sent to us: the estimate is worked out in your browser.

How this works

The calculator uses a simple, openly stated model. The first year of a pet's life counts as 15 human years and the second adds 9, so a two-year-old is about 24. After that every year adds a fixed number of human years: 4 for a cat, and for a dog 4, 5, 6 or 7 depending on size, because larger dogs tend to age faster.

Life stages are general bands of age, not a diagnosis. A cat is usually called a kitten in its first year, a young adult until about 7, a mature adult until about 11, and a senior after that. For dogs the age at which a pet is considered senior is earlier the larger the dog is.

Real animals vary: breed, health, weight and lifestyle all matter. Use the result to understand roughly where your pet is in life, and talk to your veterinarian about what that means for your pet's care.
